"Llecilia and her Daughters"

By Kisa

It is not known exactly when the Dalmite kingdom was formed. The earliest recorded entry on Dalmites in the history of Adellion is in the year 2081TS. The capital of the Dalmite kingdom at the time was thought to be Tilitha, and Llecilia was the leader.

Tilitha was discovered by the outside world when a small band of explorers went deep into the forests in search of plant life that was said to offer cures for sickness, as well as other benefits. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, as they were unfamiliar with the woods, the band of travelers ran into an area where a Dalmite hunting party was camped. Shocked that outsiders had made it this far into the forest without being attacked by other creatures, the Dalmites moved quickly, and by force, had captured the weary band of travelers.

Not knowing what to do with travelers, for as far as the hunting party knew, no one knew about Dalmites, they decided to take the prisoners with them to Tilitha. Llecilia, their leader, resided there, and she would know what to do. During the two-day journey, tensions were high. Although the Dalmites harmed no one, unless provoked, they could display a quite amazing show of strength and iron will.

Back in Tilitha, the outsiders were brought forth to be presented to Llecilia. She questioned them cordially, and they gave her at story about searching the forest for curatives. She questioned them further curtly, and they finally broke down to say that they were looking for more than just curatives. They had heard rumors of plants that when taken into the body would have almost magical effects of improving the mind and body, and preserving youth. Llecilia laughed at their foolishness. One was adamant in his belief and protested that there had to be forest plants that would create wondrous effects. Considering a demonstration was needed, she called her advisor over and whispered instructions to her. Soon the woman came back bringing back several cups of drink. Instructing them to ingest the liquid, she told them they would have firsthand knowledge of what the forest could provide them. Standing proud before them, she smiled as the travelers drank down the tea. They soon began to experience a hazy state of mind, leaving them virtually unaware of their surroundings. Affecting them for several days, it blurred their memories enough so that they could not exactly remember what happened during their time in Tilitha, nor the way they got there in the first place. The only thing they could recall is the name Tilitha and a strong, but beautiful woman, named Llecilia.

So began the tales and rumors about the kingdom of the Dalmites. A few people questioned why Llecilia even let the captives go if they did not want to be discovered, yet no one professed to know her reason.

Inside the Dalmite kingdom they were content to remain secluded. This way they had no interference from outsiders and their beliefs while they studied the teachings of Dal.

The next year, in 2082TS, Llecilia became restless. The thought of the ease in which the outsiders found her people had been bothering her. If they had found the main Dalmite city, then others would too. She did not want to lose what she considered her domain, the forests, to outsiders. So Llecilia called forth her four daughters, Aerthilye, Telantha, Kisami, and Duissa. Since they showed promised as young leaders, being strong in both body and spirit like her, Llecilia discussed a plan with them as to how to secure the forests for the Dalmite people. Let no outsiders abuse the forests, was the idea they were to foster. She then shared a plan with them to do this. The daughters were to decide which one of them would remain in Tilitha and carry on the leadership there. The other three were to gather as many of the people as would follow each of them, to depart for other forests. After discussing it, they all agreed that Kisami would stay with Llecilia and carry on the leadership of the Dalmites in the Mataril Woods. Aerthilye, traveled to the southwest to settle, Telantha, to the north and Duissa, to the forests in the far southern territory. Those that remained with Llecilia and Kisami, were designated to create outlying outposts to prevent those uninvited from visiting Tilitha again. It was time to broaden the horizons of the Dalmites, time to make their presence known in every forest on Adellion.

During this relocation of the people, a new governing structure was created. Instead of all people living in one place with one ruler, there was now a selected leader that looked to the ruler. Tribes were created from the alliances between families, and their leaders were usually the winner of a physical and mental contest between the head of the households. Each of the tribal leaders then looked to Llecilia, or one of her daughters, to mediate for them when needed.

Twenty years passed as the Dalmite kingdom continued to grow. Several towns lie near the outskirts of the forests, most notably ones in Aerthilye's region to the east. Occasionally outsiders were spotted in the forests, but if they did no harm, most times they were left alone as long as they left quickly. Around the year 2102TS, lone wanderers started making their way into the forests. Pleading peace, some of the wanderers make their way into some tribes in Aerthilye's region. These wanderers proclaimed themselves prophets and told their stories. Most of the tribes folk laughed at the ludicrous "prophecies," yet as word got around, some of the tribal leaders began to seek out Aerthilye's advice.

Aerthilye began to entertain a few of the prophets that wandered into her kingdom. She listened skeptically to their prophecies, and asked them other questions, such as how they came to prophesize and what guided them. Aerthilye decided that she would take a trip to visit her mother Llecilia, and bring two of the prophets with her, to see what she had to say about them.

Having been forewarned of her daughter's visit, Llecilia received the prophets in good fashion. One of them seemed only interested in making everyone smile and laugh at his good fortune prophecies that he told the listeners after suppertime. The other prophet, however, told of events to come that did not correspond with the Dalmite religion and oft times mentioned gods that were part of another religion. After a few hours of quietly listening and judging this second prophet, Llecilia rose up, eyes flaming, and demanded that the prophet be banished from the Dalmite kingdom, as well as any others who would speak against the teachings of the Dal.

New of what had transpired in Llecilia's home spread amongst the Dalmites. Over the next five years, tribal leaders seeking Llecilia's approval would bring a "prophet" from their own tribe to her, or other Dalmites claiming themselves to be prophets would journey to Llecilia's home to tell their stories. A great many of these prophets would come out of Telantha's homeland.

One day during the year 2107TS, Llecilia disappeared into the forests for three weeks. Her close friends and advisors were used to this. It was said that the gods spoke to her at times like these, and that she withdrew into the forest to converse with them. When Llecilia returned, she declared that the gods told her that all Dalmites must go through rites to proclaim their devotion to them, to the forest, and to their culture. Llecilia herself performed the first rites, and among the first to be put through the rites was Llecilia's own daughter Telantha, and several Dalmite prophets. All Dalmites were to be put through the rites, which would usually be overseen by the tribal leader. Llecilia proclaimed that all those over age 12 would be put through the rites, and every time someone turned 12 from then on would also take the rites. They thus became known as the Rites of Passage. To signal that a Dalmite had completed the Rites, everyone would walk away from them bearing the green and brown tattoos on their bodies that would forever bind them to the forest.

In the year 2136TS, at the age of 91, Llecilia disappeared into the forests for the last time. It was said that Llecilia was bothered by strange prophecies in other lands in recent years that proclaimed doom to many people of those other cultures. It was believed that Llecilia escaped before she heard any such negative prophecies about her own Dalmite kingdom.

In the year 2250TS war broke out amongst the Dalmites in the south. Ever since the three daughters of Llecilia founded their own tribes, women had led all tribes. The northern, southern, and eastern forests have always looked up to one main leader, usually a descendent of Llecilia and her daughters. Other tribes are usually led by the strongest woman in that tribe, with leadership being passed down to her daughter or another female relative. But in this year, in the southern forests, war breaks out in the lands that Duissa had settled and called her own. It could very well be attributed to Duissa, in fact, that full-blown war broke out here and not elsewhere in the Dalmite nation. Duissa had had a temper that was quick to flare up, and while she was still alive and presiding over the Dalmites in the southern forests, there had been many skirmishes over power between the tribes. Duissa had encouraged the people to fight. Now in this year, many Dalmite men banded together and declared war on the tribes where men wanted to rule yet were not able or allowed to overtake the current woman in leadership. The battle for power raged over 15 years, with leadership of tribes being passed around so much that it was not always clear who was leading. Sometimes the battles were merely of words and wit, other times they were bloody ending in many deaths, including deaths of the current leaders.

At the end of these 15 years (2265TS), Jolinae, a descendent of Duissa and still viewed as being the leader of the southern tribes, cried a halt. She declared that anyone could challenge her, and that if they bested her in strength of both body and mind, that they would become the leader of her tribe. Likewise, any tribal leader could be challenged and their position taken over. This thinking and way of establishing tribal leaders slowly spread throughout the Dalmite nation. To this day, leaders of Dalmite tribes are not always determined by bloodlines, however if a child possesses the same traits that their parent did when they lead, the child has a high likelihood of taking over the leadership. Leadership now went to the strongest in both body and mind. Most leaders to the present day are still female, although a few leaders throughout the Dalmite history have been male. It is said that the Dalmite gods prefer female leaders, and that they show this through blessing females with the strength of mind and will that Llecilia once had, while men receive no such assistance from the gods.

Several years later in the year 2271 TS, a renowned prophet from the northern forests traveled to Tilitha. Although Llecilia was no longer around to approve of prophets' foretellings, they had habit of journeying to Tilitha to declare their prophecies, especially if they consider them to be groundbreaking. This particular prophet tells of a great war that is to fall upon the world within 200 years, involving all nations of the world. In order to impress upon the outside world the strength of prophets who believe in the true gods, Aerthi, who leads the same tribe that her ancestor Aerthilye led a long time ago, spread the word of this prophecy to other cultures, later calling it the Phophecy of the Nine Kings.
